Child Protection in Emergencies Training Course
Course Overview
The Child Protection in Emergencies Training Course is designed to equip humanitarian professionals, child protection practitioners, government officials, emergency responders, social workers, and development organizations with the knowledge, practical skills, and strategic competencies required to protect children affected by armed conflict, natural disasters, disease outbreaks, displacement, climate change, and other humanitarian crises. Emergencies significantly increase children's exposure to violence, abuse, exploitation, neglect, family separation, trafficking, child labor, recruitment by armed groups, and psychosocial distress. This course provides comprehensive training in Child Protection in Emergencies (CPiE), humanitarian child protection, child safeguarding, protection mainstreaming, child rights, family tracing and reunification, psychosocial support, case management, gender-sensitive programming, Accountability to Affected Populations (AAP), protection risk assessment, humanitarian coordination, and inclusive humanitarian programming to strengthen child-centered humanitarian responses and improve child well-being during emergencies.
Participants will develop practical competencies in child protection risk assessments, emergency child protection programming, child safeguarding systems, family tracing and reunification procedures, case management, referral pathways, child-friendly spaces, psychosocial support interventions, community-based child protection, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Artificial Intelligence (AI), digital child protection information management systems, mobile data collection, monitoring and evaluation, protection monitoring, humanitarian information management, safeguarding policies, Protection from Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA), and evidence-based humanitarian planning. Through practical exercises, simulations, and real-world case studies, participants will strengthen their ability to design, implement, coordinate, monitor, and evaluate effective child protection interventions that prioritize children's safety, dignity, participation, and resilience.
The training also explores international legal and humanitarian frameworks, including the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), Minimum Standards for Child Protection in Humanitarian Action (CPMS), Sphere Humanitarian Standards, Core Humanitarian Standard (CHS), international humanitarian law, international human rights law, safeguarding policies, disability inclusion, gender equality, community engagement, localization, ethical programming, donor compliance, monitoring and evaluation, organizational governance, and institutional capacity strengthening. Participants will strengthen their ability to integrate child protection across all humanitarian sectors while promoting coordinated, accountable, rights-based, and child-centered humanitarian action.
Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be able to conduct child protection risk assessments, establish child safeguarding systems, strengthen family tracing and reunification mechanisms, implement child-friendly interventions, improve referral and case management systems, integrate child protection into humanitarian programming, utilize digital technologies for child protection information management, strengthen accountability and community participation, and develop sustainable child protection strategies that safeguard children's rights and promote resilience during humanitarian emergencies.
