GIS for Peacekeeping and Humanitarian Missions Training Course

Course Introduction

GIS for Peacekeeping and Humanitarian Missions is a specialized training course designed to equip peacekeeping personnel, humanitarian responders, military officers, disaster management professionals, development practitioners, and geospatial specialists with advanced skills in applying Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to support peace operations, humanitarian assistance, crisis response, conflict management, and post-conflict recovery. Modern peacekeeping and humanitarian missions increasingly rely on geospatial intelligence, spatial data analysis, satellite imagery, mapping technologies, and location-based decision support systems to enhance operational effectiveness, improve coordination, and save lives. This course provides practical knowledge and technical expertise in using GIS technologies to address complex humanitarian and peacebuilding challenges.

The course explores the application of GIS in conflict analysis, refugee and internally displaced persons (IDP) management, disaster response coordination, humanitarian logistics, security monitoring, infrastructure assessment, environmental management, and resource allocation. Participants will learn how to integrate spatial data, satellite imagery, drone information, demographic datasets, and field observations into comprehensive geospatial frameworks that support mission planning and evidence-based decision-making. Emphasis is placed on developing accurate maps, situational awareness products, and geospatial intelligence solutions for humanitarian and peacekeeping environments.

Participants will gain hands-on experience in spatial data collection, crisis mapping, emergency operations support, risk assessment, vulnerability analysis, population movement monitoring, and humanitarian needs assessment. The course covers GIS software applications, remote sensing integration, web mapping platforms, mobile GIS technologies, and real-time geospatial information systems. Through practical exercises and real-world scenarios, participants will develop skills required to support peace operations, humanitarian coordination, and disaster preparedness initiatives across diverse operational environments.

Upon successful completion of the training, participants will be able to design and implement GIS solutions that improve humanitarian response, strengthen peacekeeping operations, enhance inter-agency collaboration, and support sustainable recovery efforts. The acquired competencies will enable organizations to improve operational planning, monitor field activities effectively, allocate resources efficiently, and make informed decisions during emergencies and peacebuilding interventions.
